What is MPLS?
MPLS is the short term for multiprotocol label switching. It is a special routing technique being used to create a highly efficient routing path by directing data through a chain of nodes. Multiprotocol label switching removes the need for performing an IP routing lookup to determine the optimal path to transfer an IP packet, which contains user data and control information. Label switching refers to how data packets are relayed via a special technique, which occurs at the data link layer in the OSI model.
Incoming traffic is tagged when entering the MPLS network. Labels help to identify the Label Switched Path (LSP) to be used, which purpose is to send the data and information in the packet to the right destination. The packet is then forwarded to the next router until it reaches the intended destination.

What is the difference between MPLS and VPN?
MPLS and VPN are closely related. Both MPLS and VPN (Virtual Private Network) are great options for delivering a secure network that keeps you anonymous online, as well as improving connection speed. VPN uses IP lookups and data encryption, while MPLS uses labelled packers for a fast and secure connection.
MPLS is normally a smaller network compared to VPN, which can result in increased network speed. Because of less reliance on IP lookups, MPLS may also be less vulnerable to certain types of hacking. On the other hand, since data in MPLS is not encrypted, user privacy might be at risk if outsiders gain access to the private network.

Is MPLS or SD-Wan right for my business?
Many companies find themselves choosing between MPLS or SD-WAN (Software-Defined Wide Area Network) solutions, but both have a place in modern businesses. SD WANalso applies rules and policies to send traffic along the best path within the network. With a WAN-traffic architect, you can apply policies across all WAN devices from a central point. MPLS uses more fixed and predetermined network paths.
Once the MPLS has been deployed, you can expect a guaranteed performance level. SD-Wan creates a more efficient path, but because of its inclusion of open internet, you cannot expect a guaranteed performance level. SD-WAN is widely recognised for its agility and flexibility. The benefits of MPLS include a more ideal solution for high connectivity and security demands.
